The memorial commemorates the Middelburg citizens who became victim of the German occupation during 1940-1944. Underneath the pedestal a cylinder has been incorporated with a scroll containing the names of those fellow citizens who perished during World War II.

Standvastigh is ghebleven mijn hert in teghenspoet
Remained persistent my heart in adversity 1940 1944
Note: At the court yard of the Abbey of Middelburg three plaques are to be found, referring to the victims of World War II.
