Castle WynendaleBack Oostendestraat 390, Torhout
Wijnendale Castle is a moated castle in the woods of Torhout. The municipal museum located in the castle has fully updated the visitor tour of the castle as a tourist attraction. Using modern multimedia the visitor relives the historic events of the castle and its occupants. The castle played an important role during World War II. It was here in May 1940 that Leopold III, with his ministers, refused to flee to France. After the war this would give rise to the Royal Question, which led to Baudouin taking Leopold III’s place as king in 1951.
