Polderhuis Westkapelle, dyke and warmuseum

Back Zuidstraat 154-156, 4361 AK Westkapelle

Dyke and warmuseum Polderhuis Westkapelle tells the story of the Westkappelle community: about the origin of the village, the island of Walcheren and it’s folklore. Also much attention is given to the allied landings at Westkapelle in 1944, including the dyke bombardment on October 3rd. and the following flooding.

The Polderhuis Foundation has been founded in November 1999. It is an active organization in the field of preservation and transfer of culture, this way promoting and stimulating the interest of the local population (Westkappelaars) as well as tourists in its activities. The Polderhuis is a former building of the ‘Waterschap’ (District water board) which used to be the main employer for the construction and maintenance of dykes in Westkapelle. The Foundation Polderhuis Museum utilizes the museum and organizes exhibitions and several cultural activities for young and old people.

Note: A Liberty Bridge, commemorating the Royal Marines of the Allied Forces that died in action, is situated nearby the museum.
