This long-established coastal gunnery school continued to play a significant role in artillery training in the Second World War, and remains survive from various gun mountings. It was also the site of a coastal gun battery with two emplacements for 6" (150 mm) guns, both demolished though some remains survive. These were supported by searchlights, the emplacement for one of which survives. Other World War Two features survive including nine air raid shelters, a beach defence headquarters (converted searchlight emplacement) and a pillbox.
