Machine Gun Pillbox

Back Lady Ann’s Road, Holkham, Norfolk

One of a pair of machine gun pillboxes forming the last line of defences for Holkham beach.

Vickers Machine guns were generally sited in pairs and used for two purposes in coastal defence landscapes – either to enfilade beaches or to form a rear line of defence in order to cover beach exits. The pillbox at Holkham falls into the latter category and was one of a pair that were sited on a former railway line that runs parallel to Holkham beach. The pillbox itself is effectively two pillboxes joined together to allow for a greater field of fire. The second pillbox for this machine gun group can be seen in the adjacent field and another pair was positioned further to the west.
