La Plaine au BoisBack Rue des Dunkirk Veterans, 59470 Esquelbecq
Location of a massacre by SS troups on british troops, on May 28th 1940.
On 28 May 1940, the Germans were continuing their march on Dunkirk, attacking the strategic crossroads at Wormhout, defended by the British. The Royal Warwickshire Regiment, the Cheshire Regiment and the Royal Artillery all put up heroic resistance, yet finally had to surrender. A hundred soldiers were taken prisoner, and imprisoned in a barn in the "Plaine au Bois" in Esquelbecq. Members of the Regiment SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, the Führer's personal bodyguards, could not tolerate the resistance they put up, and assassinated them there and then.
This is now a remembrance site to commemorate the massacre. It can be visited on open tours, every day of the week. It is possible to reserve guided tours.
