V1 basis

Back Vrijbos, Houthulst

Here you can still see remains of the Houthulst V1 base. The V1 was the Germans’ first V weapon from World War II. It is also the first unmanned jet plane in the world. The weapon was not accurate, but was very effective. The V1 base was built by Russian prisoners of war on behalf of German occupying forces just before liberation in 1944. The intention was to bomb London from here, but no bombs were ever launched. After the war the launch base was used as a slide for local youngsters, but the platform was eventually demolished.
